Huguenot Memorial Park Closed Due to Road Damage from High Tides and Weather
Introduction
People hoping to spend the weekend in Huguenot Memorial Park must make other plans. The park is now closed owing to road damage from high tides and other weather conditions.
Signs warning that Huguenot Memorial Park was closed for maintenance were posted on Heckscher Drive, miles before the park entrance. Even at the park’s entrance, double red flags flew to warn the public that the water was closed.
Crews spent most of the day cleaning debris from the washed-away road so that fill could be brought in to reinforce the remaining portion of the road.
The whole right side of the road was washed away for more than 50 yards, with some damage extending over the double yellow line into the left lane.
Substantial Damage
Following substantial damage caused by Hurricane Matthew and Irma in recent years, a portion of the road further into the park has been strengthened with huge rocks.
The section of the road washed away this week was not covered by huge boulders, leaving it open to the St. Johns River.
Staff at Huguenot Park recommended that visitors who wanted to go to the beach this weekend visit Hannah Park or Big Talbot Island instead.
